I want to design a lightweight web layer on top of NYC Open Data using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The current OpenDataNYC experience is powerful for accessing datasets, but it still feels primarily like a data catalog rather than an exploratory civic tool.
Brainstorm 8–10 web features that could be “vibecoded” on top of existing NYC Open Data datasets and APIs without requiring a complex backend. Prioritize features that make public data easier to explore, understand, compare, and act on.
For each idea, include:
the user problem it solves
relevant NYC Open Data datasets/APIs
the core HTML/CSS/JavaScript functionality
what the interface would look like
why it improves on the current OpenDataNYC experience
Consider ideas such as interactive maps, neighborhood comparisons, “what’s happening near me” dashboards, timeline playback, anomaly detection, natural-language dataset search, cross-dataset overlays, personalized alerts, accessibility-focused visualizations, and tools that translate raw civic data into plain-language insights.
Focus on concepts that a student could prototype quickly using tools such as the Socrata API, Mapbox/Leaflet, Chart.js/D3.js, and vanilla JavaScript.
